more to come in June 2018...

celebrating 75 years of freedom

On 6 June 2019, it will be exactly 75 years ago that hundreds of thousands of young men and women landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. On this day, known as “D-Day”, they came from twelve different countries, willing to give their lives for peace and freedom. Many of the American, British, Canadian, French, but also Polish and Dutch soldiers, died. Yet, despite this, they ensured that D-Day was the start of the liberation of Europe and the fall of the Nazi dictatorship.

Now, 75 years later, we will celebrate the liberation of Europe and the end of the Second World War with two mesmerising Liberty Concerts. The first one in Normandy, on 6 June 2019, in the presence of the last remaining veterans, and the second one in Berlin (8-9 May 2020). Both the Liberty Concerts and special Liberty Talks will call upon the world to stand up for peace and liberty again. By doing so, we will show our ultimate respect for the courage of the veterans 75 years ago.

'We have a duty to honour their memory by carrying the torch of freedom onwards, reminding people of the past so that we may learn from history to build a brighter tomorrow.'

Liberty Concert Normandy

At 16 minutes past midnight, exactly at the same time D-Day commenced 75 years ago, the celebration of Europe’s liberation will start with the first Liberty Concert. At Sword Beach, with a view across the very sea from where the battle for freedom was launched. Liberty Concert Normandy will last for 22 hours, precisely as long as it took, 75 years ago, to gain control of the beaches of Normandy. The concert will start with classical music, films, parachutists and storytelling about the landing. World famous, international artists and DJs will then take to the stage to reach out to the younger generations, accompanied by the seventy-man strong Metropole Orchestra.

Thanks to the TV broadcast in dozens of countries and live streaming on the Internet, millions of people will be reached with our positive invitation to work harder for a safe, free and inclusive society.

Freedom Fighters ®
Liberty Concerts, Liberty Talks, global campaigning and TV programmes provide excellent opportunities to touch, in particular, the hearts of young people. Inspiring them to register as new Freedom Fighters. With this in mind, we are also developing an appealing, interactive Freedom Village; both live - during the Liberty Concerts - as well as a digital platform. To safeguard and develop peace and freedom, thousands of new volunteers are needed for organisations such as Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Red Cross, MasterPeace and also for positions within the fire department, neighbourhood watch schemes, food banks and language training for former refugees.

Liberty Talks Nijmegen

For the Liberty Talks, one thousand young, bright and ultra-creative minds – from all corners of the world – will be invited in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Hosted by popular journalists and talk-show hosts, the Liberty Talks will focus all this creative brainpower on the main challenges faced for a safe, free and inclusive world. The objective is the creation of new ways of thinking, opportunities, visions and solutions.

Visions for the future will be contributed and articulated by singer-songwriters, dancers, filmmakers, cartoonists, visual artists and designers. After all, the creative industry is leading in communicating, connecting and thinking innovatively and across borders. Of course, there will be speakers too, who will – after careful selection and mentoring – contribute TEDx-style.

Current leaders in business and politics will submit their biggest issue to the participants of the Liberty Talks, who will be asked to come up with their solutions. Between June 2019 (Liberty Concert Normandy) and December 2019 (1st edition Liberty Talks) hundreds of schools, universities and theatres will organise small scale Liberty Talks to select the brightest minds for the international Liberty Talks.

We expect the Liberty Talks to become a new, annual mind-boggling event that will surprise the world with its results.

Liberty Concert Berlin

On 9 May 2020 at 23:01 in the evening, it will be 75 years since the American, English, French, German and Russian armies signed for the end of the Second World War in Europe. Precisely at that moment, Liberty Concert Berlin will celebrate this with performances by international top artists from all these countries. A celebration, but also a spotlight on the benefits of international collaboration and the importance of building a safe, free and inclusive society for the future. Therefore, artists with a Syrian and Turkish background will perform as well. By night, the world’s top DJs will turn the Liberty Concert into an amazing celebration of togetherness.
